In this up-close-and-personal interview with Angélique Willkie, Kettly Noël (Mali) talks about the Danse mutante project, sharing her thoughts on the fear involved in creative work, the trauma of the African experience in relation to the white colonial body, and the symbolism of hair for African women. She also applauds the openness of the two dancers in the project—Francis Ducharme and Riley Sims—who arrived with a choreographic story, but were completely open to moving in new directions. Check out this amazing video of the Malian project, with shots of rehearsals and scenes from the artists’ daily life. The videos were directed by Xavier Curnillon and co-produced by the FJPP and Mayday.
