Distorsion — Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image

Harold Rhéaume interviews Josiane Bernier dancer in the 2021 version of Les Dix Commandements and Natalie Plante, dancer of the 1998 version.

This is the third of ten interviews we discover that for the past 20 years, Natalie was under the impression she had danced the first commandment (“Thou shalt have no other gods before me”) rather than the third. According to Harold, this goes to show the wide range of possible meanings in contemporary dance.

During the meeting, Harold discusses in detail the creative process behind the work—both in 1998, when he was starting out as a choreographer, and in 2020, during this time marked by COVID-19 with the necessary physical distancing involved. He describes the magnificent music composed in 2020 by Josué Beaucoage—a larger-than-life sound that will guide the creation of the new solo for Josiane, who was completely blown away and inspired by the musician’s compositions.
