Participation

I was luckier than the other participants of THREAD/BARE because I knew the deep concepts behind Randal Newman’s creations. I was able to form and push ideas that transformed the piece to encompass my mind in its’ concrete world. Yet…I was still a player in its’ playground. The thing that touched me the deepest was the smell and comfort of vulnerability the installation gave off. I felt all your being was accepted for all its’ idiosyncrasies and imperfections. It was a beautifully safe place to share movement, physicality, emotions and let your soul feel freed. Randal Newman made a special place for all of us whom performed and who watched.

Production

The creation of THREAD/BARE happened very quickly, yet the inspiration and concept had been brewing for close to ten years. Randal Newman and I had discussed the use of plexiglass because of its’ power of allowing protected vulnerability. Then the photographs that lined one gallery wall became our jumping point. Taken in Randal’s studio, they came about almost from thin air. The sheer force of these photos catapulted the rest of THREAD/BARE’s creation. The red thread tied ideas, feelings, movement, words, and structure together. The invitation of artists to play in this world gave it even larger life by giving them places to explore that were outside the normal structure for dance and performance. The gallery Produit Rien was the perfect white box for our sparse, energetically charged installation. All these elements came together becoming THREAD/BARE, an expression of hope, vulnerability, pain, hurt, and ultimately healing.
