Espace Perreault Choreographic Transmission extends a warm invitation to dancers to attend a writing circle about injuries in dance, taking place Thursday, March 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the UQAM Dance Department’s Laboratoire. This workshop will provide content for our collaborative platform Sismography: Recording the injuries, grief, and perils of dance and will give you the opportunity to write your story in a supportive, collaborative space.
Sismography is a sensitive archive of the subtle tremors and deep shudders that have marked the practice of dancers and that often remain taboo: physical and psychological injuries, illness, conditions, and disabilities that can impede, prevent, transform, and divert dance. If you are unfamiliar with the platform, we encourage you to explore it and discover the moving testimonials from artists who have shared their stories in text or audio format.
The writing circle will be led by dance artist Mathi LP in dialogue with Catherine Lavoie-Marcus, artist, researcher, and creator for Sismography; and they will support dancers as they write their stories. The authors will choose whether their text will be published anonymously or not. A fee of $100 will be paid to workshop participants for publishing their text on the platform.
How do we write our injured bodies and make sense of our experience through our stories? That’s the question we will ask on March 14.
If you need guidance or want to delve deeper into the knots and injuries your dancing body carries as part of a writing group, we encourage you to indicate your interest in the workshop by sending an email to comm@espaceperreault.ca, because a maximum of 10 dancers can take part in it. Thank you in advance!
