Originally from Venezuela, José Navas has been dancing and choreographing for 40 years. He learned English and French in the rehearsal studios.

Speaking to Marie-Gabrielle Ménard, he recounts his formative years in Caracas and New York, and the influence on him of feminists Susan Sontag, Simone de Beauvoir and Frida Kahlo. He talks about his interest in the works of Federico García Lorca and Gabriel García Márquez, as well as his idols, choreographers Isadora Duncan, Merce Cunningham and Pina Bausch. Forever engraved in his memory is the moment when he performed Le Sacre du printemps solo with the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra.
