\u201cAs human beings, we are sensitive to two things: to one another, as well as to the spaces we inhabit and that surround us,\u201d states Jean-Pierre Perreault, choreographer and scenographer. [translation from original in French]<\/em><\/p>\n

Jean-Pierre Perreault was born to Simone Larreault and Ir\u00e9n\u00e9e Perreault February 16, 1947 in Montr\u00e9al. After finishing high school, he attended classes at the \u00c9cole des arts appliqu\u00e9s, as well as at the \u00c9cole des m\u00e9tiers commerciaux.<\/p>\n

It was his encounter during the late 1960s with Jeanne Renaud, just as she was about to establish Le Groupe de la Place Royale, that led Jean-Pierre Perreault to dance. From there, things moved quickly as he acquired basic technical training at the school of Le Groupe de la Place Royale, joining the company in 1967 at the age of twenty. In 1971, he became co-artistic director of the company with Peter Boneham, and began what would prove to be a prolific career as a choreographer.<\/p>\n

Between 1969 and 1983, Perreault travelled extensively in Europe, Asia and Africa developing interests in architecture, traditional dance, and the sacred arts.\u00a0 He explored the influence of dress and society on choreography and dance vocabulary. Moving beyond the world of dance, Perreault was also interested in the visual arts, learning from artists such as Marcelle Ferron, Fernand Leduc, Fran\u00e7oise Sullivan, Gilles Tremblay and Serge Garant who gravitated around Le Groupe de la Place Royale during this period.<\/p>\n

This privileged milieu informed Jean-Pierre Perreault\u2019s holistic approach to the creative process where choreography is intrinsically linked to set design, lighting, music and costume. As a choreographer-scenographer, he believed all of these elements to be connected as part of a singular creative gesture. Between 1972 and 1981, Perreault choreographed numerous works during his tenure at Le Groupe de la Place Royale. These works reflect his global approach to the creative process-an approach that would become his unique and powerful signature as his creative vision developed over subsequent years.<\/p>\n

In 1981, Jean-Pierre Perreault struck out on his own. He became artist-in-residence at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver British Columbia and at the Laban Center for Movement and Dance in London England, before returning to settle in Montr\u00e9al. From 1984 to 1992, he taught full time in the dance department at l\u2019Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al. In 1984 he established his own company, the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault. With this new company, Perreault went on to create many major works for traditional theatrical spaces, most notably Joe, Stella, Nuit, Les Lieux-dits, Or\u00e9noque, \u00celes, Adieux, La Vita, Eironos, Les Ann\u00e9es de P\u00e8lerinage<\/em> and L\u2019Exil-L\u2019Oubli<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Interested in the relationship between man and open space, as well as the variability of time, Perreault created in situ<\/em>works such as Les Dames aux Vaches<\/em>, The Highway \u201986 Event<\/em> and Piazza<\/em>. He also created three major choreographic installations of variable duration (from three to four hours): Installation chor\u00e9graphique I: L\u2019instinct, Les \u00c9ph\u00e9m\u00e8res 1997<\/em> andLes ombres<\/em>-all of which isolated the spectators from each other while seated in immediate proximity to the performnce space. These innovative works challenged the conventional relationship of dance to its audience. They were unforgettable installations embraced by Montr\u00e9al audiences and critics alike.<\/p>\n

In addition to creating works for his own company, Jean-Pierre Perreault accepted invitations and commissions elsewhere. In 1991, he was commissioned by Sweden\u2019s Cullbergbaletten to choreograph a work for the official opening of their new dance hall. Flykt<\/em> was considered to be \u201ca strong and perilous work\u201d (Dagens Nyheter, 1991). He was also invited to choreograph for Montr\u00e9al Danse, Paul-Andr\u00e9 Fortier, the Chrissie Parrot dance company (Perth), Daniel Souli\u00e8res, Monique Giard, Marc Boivin, Mark Shaub among others.\u00a0 In 2001, James Kudelka, artistic director for the National Ballet of Canada commissioned Perreault to choreograph a piece for the company. The Comforts of Solitude<\/em>would be Jean-Pierre Perreault\u2019s last major work.<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Perreault mediated his choreographic creative process through drawing and painting. Having developed an impressive body of visual art works, he was invited to exhibit his drawings in solo shows in New York, Antwerp, Qu\u00e9bec, Montr\u00e9al, Glasgow and Stockholm. Most of these works, as well as his sketchbooks, are now among the holdings of Biblioth\u00e8que et Archives nationales du Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n

In 1993, the Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault acquired a former church on Sherbrooke Street East, corner de Lorimier in Montr\u00e9al as a permanent base and studio for the company. In 2001, the renovations were completed under the supervision of Jean-Pierre Perreault and architect Pierre Thibault. Since 2008, l\u2019\u00c9difice Jean-Pierre-Perreault has been administered by Circuit-Est, Centre chor\u00e9graphique and is at the disposal of the Qu\u00e9bec dance community. This vital creative space is not only a testament to the vision of its founder, but also to the enduring vitality of contemporary dance in Qu\u00e9bec to which Perreault made such an important contribution.<\/p>\n

In 1990, Jean-Pierre Perreault received The Chalmers Award for Creativity and Excellence in the Arts. He received the Jean A. Chalmers Award for Distinction in Choreography in 1996.<\/p>\n

In 1991 and again in 1993, the Grand Prix du Conseil des Arts de la Communaut\u00e9 Urbaine de Montr\u00e9al was given to Jean-Pierre Perreault. In 2000, the Grand Prix d\u2019excellence artistique du Conseil des Arts de la Communaut\u00e9 Urbaine de Montr\u00e9al was given to Jean-Pierre Perreault for his choreographic work, L\u2019Exil-L\u2019Oubli<\/em>.<\/p>\n

During an official ceremony at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa in November 2002, Jean-Pierre Perreault was fighting cancer as he was presented with the Governor General\u2019s Performing Arts Award. He passed away only a few weeks later on December 4, 2002.<\/p>\n

A composer of numerous electro acoustic, mixed, and multimedia works, Bertrand Ch\u00e9nier has written the score for many of Jean-Pierre Perreault\u2019s productions.<\/p>\n

Ginelle Chagnon<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ginelle Chagnon acted as rehearsal mistress at the\u00a0 Fondation as well as assistant to Jean-Pierre Perreault for many years. She has earned an established reputation as a teacher, and receives frequent invitations from both Canadian and international institutions. She has been a member of the Board of Directors from 2003 to 2014.<\/p>\n

Sylviane Martineau<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cultural advisor for dance at the Conseil des arts de Montr\u00e9al, Sylviane Martineau\u2019s twenty-five years of experience have been divided between performance (for Jean-Pierre Perreault, in particular), performance direction, administration, project management, and teaching.<\/p>\n

Jeanne Renaud<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dancer, choreographer, artistic director and founder of the Groupe de la Place Royale, Jeanne Renaud has played a defining role in the development of contemporary dance in Qu\u00e9bec. She has acted as an arts officer at the Canada Council for the Arts and as director of the dance service of the Minist\u00e8re des Affaires culturelles du Qu\u00e9bec.
